2 months old!

Dear Eden,

You are two months old. Nearly nine weeks. 62 days. So much has happened.

At your two month mark, you've done more than many people get to do in a lifetime. Between month one and the end of month 2, you have traveled to three different countries (Germany, Portugal and Canada), took eight different flights! You've been on top of a mountain on one of the most beautiful islands in the world, traveled through many UNESCO sites, attended your first academic conference, had your first bottle, went to your first palace, traveled to the lakehouse for the first time, and met so many new people from all over the world- including aunties, uncles, nana, papa and many more.

To travel we purchased an Ergo and started putting you in it before we left. You seem to really like it! It has an infant insert that it seems like you've already nearly grown out of, and Portugal was HOT so sometimes we didn't put you in it because the temps were high, but overall you love being close to us. You were in the ergo for many of our adventures, including hiking a mountain and traveling through many sites across portugal where we hiked.

I realize you won't remember Portugal, but it really was an amazing trip and you were fantastic. Maybe when you are an adult you can travel back to the wonderful places we visited- from the fisherman's houses in Costa Nova, the history and old town feel of Lisbon and Porto- eating Natas, heading to the top of the Cleirgos tower, riding the cablecar through Lisbon, the awesome Pena palace in Sintra, the stunning cliffside beaches in the Algarve, all along near Lagos, the sea cave tours from Benagil beach, sunset cruising down the Douro river, wandering along the streets with painted doors in Madeira, and hiking to all of the majestic natural beauty throughout the island. I hope you go again someday and revisit all of these amazing places.

At two months, things continue to change so quickly. You have a voice and you are pretty intentional with it. You dislike diaper changes and getting dressed, love the bathtub and are most happy first thing in the morning, when you are full of smiles and love to "talk" to me. Its adorable. I've tried to get a video a few times but as soon as my phone comes out you stop as if to say, get that thing out of my face.

Speaking of phones, this month is when I started to get real about technology in your presences. Just in the few years between you and Owen technology has changed so much. I didn't have an iphone with Owen, it was easy to not be online all the time. But now we have iphones and we are so connected that sometimes its hard to break away. So I'm starting to intentionally leave my phone far away when you are awake and have a rule about only using it when you are asleep. I really don't want you to engage screens any earlier than you have to and I also want you to have our full attention and effort, so bye bye phone.

Of course, since we were traveling so much, we weren't really trying for a schedule quite yet. Portugal is 6 hours ahead, so its difficult to think you'd stick to any kind of normal sleep schedule with the back and forth regarding what is night and what is day. But you've adjusted successfully, which is a nice surprise. You do though still love to sleep in our arms. We've been trying to get you to sleep in the crib these last weeks of your second month and its working (mildly). Baby steps to full naps.

I also noticed after we got home from Portugal that you've started to get somewhat of a schedule all on your own. For example, while we don't put you in bed at seven, it seems like about then is when you fall asleep on one of us and stay out for the rest of the night with wake ups to nurse and get changed, so we're paying attention to that. You also max out your happy awake time at about 1.5 hours, so we watch for that now too. Sometimes you want to nurse more than every 3 hours, and I let you, reasoning its likely a growth spurt, but by and large, you keep a close to three hour cycle for feeding.

At two months, the few social smiles in your first month have turned into big belly laugh grins. Its funny to hear you laugh because its more of an intentional cough right now. You smile so huge and then sort of cough cough, but its all fake. Its so funny. Your conversation is pretty responsive now too, which is fun. We have conversational turns quite a bit when you are happy and alert.

You don't love tummy time, but you have a pretty strong neck, probably from craning it around when you are sleeping on your tummy when you are on me, so I don't worry about it terribly. You have usually 5-8 minute good stretches of tummy time and then you yell at us to pick you up.

You are also really getting to know and love daddy. He's practicing his patented football hold with you, which you seem to like and he's got all sorts of voices he uses with your toys, especially the peacock (which you seem to like best). Having those two weeks in Portugal together I think helped start that bond a long and now I'm not so worried about leaving you all for a weekend next month. He's also started giving you a few bottles, which I think helps you to know that he's got the goods too- just in a different form. I imagine before long you'll be a daddy's girl too.

I mentioned in your first month post that I'm more relaxed this time and it continues to be true. I find myself doing things I NEVER would have done with the boys. For example, in Portugal we didn't always have your carseat with us, so we actually held you on a few taxi rides (EEk!). You're not exactly fond of the carseat- hopefully it will grow on you with time.

At two months you also continue to grow like a weed. I'm not sure how much you weigh, because we skipped your appt because of being portugal so really you'll have a 3 month instead of 2 month appt. but I'm guessing you are something like 11 pounds now. You seem to be even growing out of the 3 month old clothes!

At home you seem to really still love being outdoors- you look at everything, and like your swing a lot. In the morning I put you in it while I make the boy's lunches and get them breakfast and you look on happily. You also really love to bat at your jingly toys on your play mat, which is really fun to see. The boys love playing with you and you love them right back. You really want to interact with them, which I love to see.

Two months passed so quickly! I can't wait to see how you'll continue to change, but month three is bittersweetness ahead, because it means my maternity leave is ending, which will be sad for me, but it means that you are getting big enough to be with Candy, and I can't think of a better nanny to have in your life, so just as we move into the third month, I know that we are totally blessed and so thankful that you are a growing, happy, healthy, baby girl!

all my love!
momma (and daddy too)
